At Lubeck we run a self replacing poll merino sheep enterprise. Breeding our own rams we currantly use DNA testing to select our PP multiple birth rams. We have previously used AI from various studs. The top 4% of maiden ewes are retained to our stud flock and from these our rams are bred. In our commercial flock three age groups are used for breeding, being heavily classed, scanned for pregnancy and being re-classed every year. The rams go out mid March for August/September lambing. All merino ewes and hoggets are shorn early July. The merino rams are shorn early February.
At our Dadswells Bridge property, Warra, our four and a half, five and a half and six and a half year old merino ewes are shorn early February and mated to borders and composite rams in mid December for May lambing. All ewe lambs are retained for our own breeding and the wethers sold as suckers or stores. All ewes are pregnancy scanned and the empties are sold.
First cross ewes with their second cross lambs
At Mt Dryden the retained first cross ewes are February shorn, mated to white suffolks in mid-December for a mid-May lambing. All ewes are pregnancy scanned and the empties are sold. All second cross lambs are sold as suckers. Old first cross ewes are sold.
